Book Vs. Movie Podcast (Replay)

"Girl Interrupted"

The 1993 Susanna Kaysen Novel Vs. The 1999 Winona Ryder-Produced Movie

First, let us say this. If you are having mental health and/or emotional issues and need help. Here are some resources based in the United States:

  • If you are looking for a therapist, you can look up one that could work best for you from Psychology Today online at this link
  • If you are in crisis you can use the following text number to get help #741741
  • The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is ready if you want to online chat or call them at 800-273-8255

The Margos want you with us!

Now on to the episode:

Are you ready to learn a whole lot about Borderline Personality Disorder? You better damn well be because the Margos sure did after reading Girl Interrupted and man we just LOVE this book and movie discussion!

We start off talking about the recent Women’s Marches and then get right into the nitty-gritty of Susanna Kaysen’s (our author’s) interesting background and the history of the McLean Hosptial who past residents include Sylvia Plath, James Taylor, Ray Charles and David Foster Wallace. She stayed there between 1967-1968 and wrote this book in 1993.

Actress Winona Ryder (just 21 years old at the time) bought the movie rights and waited several years to see her passion project become the star vehicle for multi-award winner Angelina Jolie (oops!)

We read the book and then watched the movie. Which did the Margos like better? Listen below to find out!

In this episode the Margos discuss:

  • Susanna Kaysen’s backstory and the cost (adjusted for inflation) to “cure” her mental illness
  • Winona Ryder’s only (so far) Executive Producer credit
  • How women were treated at mental institutions in the 1960s
  • The vast number of changes between book and film
  • Angelina Jolie's incredible performance
  • The excellent supporting cast

Book Vs Movie

Who Framed Roger Rabbit

Wait, it was based on a book?

The Margos were shocked to find out that the 1988 film Who Framed Roger Rabbit (directed by Robert Zemeckis) was based on a very dark book titled Who Censored Roger Rabbit by author Gary K. Wolf which meant, of course, we had to cover them both for our show. (Thanks to all of the members of our Facebook group for pointing us in this direction!)

The book was published in 1981 and is very different in both tone and attitude to the 1988 adaptation. In the “Censored” world--the characters are darker and meaner with totally different stakes than in the movie.

Disney, which produced the film, made some substantial changes in the look and with the characters featured making it much more kid-friendly (but still with some really scary in some scenes!)

So between the book and movie--which did the Margos like better? Check out the link below to find out!

In this ep the Margos discuss :

  • The true origin story of Roger Rabbit
  • The biggest differences between book and movie
  • How the “toons” speak in the book versus the movie
  • Why the author has continually sued Disney over profits he claims he is still owed
  • The cast of the movie including Bob Hoskins, Christopher Lloyd, Joanna Cassidy and Charles Fleischer
  • The women who voiced Jessica Rabbit
  • Plus, tons of trivia and tidbits

Clips Featured:

  • Who Framed Roger Rabbit  trailer
  • Why Eddie Valiant (Bob Hoskins) won’t work with toons
  • Jessica Rabbit (Kathleen Turner) meets Eddie
  • Roger Rabbit (Charles Fleischer) “Drinks the Drink”
  • Outro Music “Wny Don’t You Do Right”  Amy Irving

Book Vs Movie Podcast

The Princess Bride” (Replay)

The Margos(once again) dissect the differences between the 1973 William Goldman novel from the 1987 cult classic film directed by Rob Reiner

Inconceivable! The Margos decided to redo (and replay!) a Book Vs. Movie podcast ep by taking on one more time (and even better) the book/movie The Princess Bride. We are always surprised to find that our listeners did not realize that the beloved classic movie was at one time a book. And that said book is very meta and multi-layered. Spoiler--we love BOTH of the versions of The Princess Bride and are so excited to be able to talk about it all once again!

In this episode we discuss:

  • The origins of the novel and its long history in turnaround
  • The plethora of differences between the book and movie
  • How the movie eventually became a cult classic
  • The incredible cast including Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, Andre the Giant, Chris Sarandon and Billy Crystal.
  • Andrea the Giant’s real proportions and the experience he had making the movie

Book Vs Movie

Jurassic Park

The 1990 nonfiction by the legendary author, director, and producer Michael Crichton

Vs the 1993 Steven Spielberg Blockbuster Film

Bring on the special, practical effects (with little CGI, please) because the Margos redo one of their more polarizing takes on a project created by two world-class geniuses--Michael Crichton and his good friend Steven Spielberg. Amazingly, Crichton came up with the original concept in the early 1980s and it took several drafts to create the novel that would be known as Jurassic Park.

At the time (1990) it was a publishing sensation, and Steven Spielberg was smart enough to grab the rights at $2 million. The film, which came out in June 1993, was a mega hit right from the start and it remains a cable TV staple to this day.

So between the book and movie--which did the Margos like better? Guys--it ain’t even close here. Check out the link below to hear our take on both.

In this ep the Margos discuss :

  • The fascinating life story of Michael Crichton
  • The friendship between him and director Steven Spielberg
  • The annoying kids featured in the book (Ugh--the dialog is brutal!)
  • The cast of the movie including Laura Dern, Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum and Sir Richard Attenborough.
  • The box office records the movie broke
  • Plus, tons of trivia and tidbits

Clips Featured:

  • News clip from KTVU-TV (San Francisco) the day the movie opened
  • Jurassic Park  trailer
  • The first sight of the dinosaurs
  • “Lexi” (Ariana Richards) and “Tim” (Joseph Mozello) meet the T-Rex
  • “The blood-sucking lawyer (Martin Ferrero) approves”
  • The kids in the kitchen with the Raptors (the importance of sound design in this film)
  • Outro Music “Jurassic Park Theme” John Williams
