“The Prestige”

(Replay with new pre-show corrections)

Between the 1995 novel by Christopher Priest and the Christopher Nolan film

Abracadabra! This is a first for us here, a corrections-heavy pre-show and a replay of one of our most popular eps--"The Prestige."

Wow--did we screw this one up. Turns out there is an author named Christopher Priest AND a graphic novelist who was born under the named James Owsley who also writes under the name Christopher Priest.

So in our pre-show, we right this wrong and give each author their due. Plus we divulge what our next new ep shall be. Win/win, people!

The Margos get a little magical in this listener-suggested book to movie adaptation that features sleight of hand, lots of dead birds, women in jeopardy and a twist ending you either did or didn’t see coming a mile away.

The book features a series of diary entries and family sleuthing which one of the Margos found rather dull. The movie is a strange mix of whimsy and sadness which the Margos enjoyed to differing levels.

So between the book and movie--which did the Margos like better? Check out the link below to find out.

In this episode the Margos discuss:

  • The numerous differences between book and movie
  • What the author really thinks about the changes in the adaptation
  • The amazing cast including an American-accented Hugh Jackman
  • The performance by the late, great David Bowie
  • How much a “wow” the tricks were on screen

Clips Featured:

  • The Prestige trailer
  • The “twist ending”

Book Vs Movie

Cold Comfort Farm”

The Margos Take a Trip to the Countryside with the 1932 novel by Stella Gibbons Vs the 1995 TV Movie Directed by John Schlesinger

We have NO idea why it took us so long to finally tackle this charming book and movie--but we are so grateful to the listeners for suggesting this idea to us! The story of 19-year-old Flora Poste (recently orphaned) who comes to Cold Comfort Farm with a pittance of an inheritance who has the gift of helping people achieve their dreams.

In this story, we meet Flora, the unique Strakadder family, Aunt Ada Doom, Mary Smiling, Adam Lambsbreath as she guides them to forget about “something nasty in the woodshed” and enjoy their lives at Cold Comfort Farm.

In this ep the Margos discuss :

  • The interesting life story of author Stella Gibson who wrote over 22 novels and books of poetry but Cold Comfort Farm remained her one and only hit.
  • The social satire of the time (writing about living on farms in England was all the rage in England in the 20s and 30s)
  • Kate Beckinsale's incandescent performance
  • The cast of the movie including Joanna Lumley, Stephen Fry, Eileen Atkins, Rufus Sewell and Sir Ian McKellen
  • Plus, movie trivia and more!

Clips Featured:

  • Cold Comfort Farm  trailer
  • Seth Starkadder becomes a movie star
  • Mr. My Bug (Stephen Fry) attempting to woo Flora Poste
  • Ian McKellan preaching “No butter in hell!”
  • Outro Music “Music from Cold Comfort Farm” Robert Lockhart

It’s time for another Stephen King bonus ep! SK superfans Margo D. and Deana of the Twisted Philly decided to take a look at the new Hulu series Castle Rock at their mid-season. So five episodes in are Margo and Deana impressed with the JJ Abrams produced show? Can they figure out the crazy plot? How many easter eggs can they find in each episode? Will they stick around for the whole series? (Well, I THINK we all know the answer to that one!)

You can listen to this episode by using the link below.

In this special Stephen King bonus episode Margo & Deana discuss:

  • The major King properties the show is based on
  • Our favorite cast members
  • Our own theories about “The Kid” and his abilities
  • The plethora of “easter eggs” for true Stephen King geeks

Book Vs Movie Podcast (Replay)

"Gone Girl"

The Gillian Flynn Hit Novel Vs. The David Fincher Film

The Margos take on one of the most contested and debated films of the past books AND movies of the last few years-- Gone Girl. If there was ever a story that was picked apart, praised, maligned and worshipped more than the 2012 novel by Gillian Flynn we have yet to hear about it.

Do you love the adventures of “Amazing Amy” Dunne and her husband Nick or do you find them irritating? How believable is the basic plot? Is Amy a sociopath or just a woman scorned? People have all kinds of opinions and the Margos are no different talking about the book and film directed by the always interesting David Fincher. (This is our third Fincher movie after we have covered Fight Club and The Social Network in previous eps.)

Some of the highlights from this discussion:

  • The casting of the leads including Rosamund Pike (Amy Dunne) and Ben Affleck (Nick Dunne)
  • Gillian Flynn’s background in magazine writing and how she adapted her own book into a screenplay
  • The insanely complicated plot (and how much it relies on the suspension of disbelief)
  • Big changes between book and movie
  • The creepy score by Trent Reznor

Audio clips:

  • Gone Girl  trailer
  • The interrogation scene between Nick Dunn, Detective Boney (Kim Dickens) and Officer Gilpin (Patrick Fugit)
  • Amy announces she is alive
  • Saved by Zero  The Fixx

Book Vs Movie

Big Fish

The Margos Embrace the Magical with the 1998 Novel by Daniel Wallace and the Tim Burton 2003 Movie

It looks like the universe wants us to tackle something a little more fanciful with this episode being about all things Big Fish including the novel by Daniel Wallace and the 2003 movie by Tim Burton. The official title of the book is Big Fish: A Novel of Mythic Proportions and you want to talk magical realism? This book has plenty of it along with fantastical escapades and beautiful language. (Spoiler---we like it quite a bit!)

The differences between the novel and the 2003 film directed by past Book Vs Movie subject (Planet of the Apes & Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children) Tim Burton are plentiful and we discuss them in this episode. (Just click the link at the bottom of this post to listen!)

In this ep the Margos discuss :

Clips Featured:

  • Big Fish  trailer
  • Young Ed Bloom (Ewan McGregor) meets “The Witch” (Helena Bonham Carter)
  • Young Ed Bloom meets “Karl the Giant” (Matthew McGrory)
  • Will Bloom (Billy Crudup) takes his father (Albert Finney) to his destiny
  • Outro Music “Let’s Work Together”  Canned Heat
