Book Vs Movie

Carrie”

The Margos Take on the Stephen King Classic in this Redo Ep

It’s October and the Margos are SO excited to revisit a classic Stephen King tale--Carrie which we originally covered in 2014 (using the old, old way we recorded back in the early days.)  This is not only King's first movie adaptation but it is also based on his first published novel. There are so many changes between book & movie that we wanted to give it a modern treatment (meaning better sound and lots of clips!)

Just how different is the original novel versus the Brian DePalma masterpiece of horror?  Whoo boy---there were some major changes made (and for very good reason in many instances.)

So which did the Margos like better? Book or Movie? Check out the link below to find out!

Once again, we are SO lucky to have Penguin Books sponsor this episode! The Margos are thrilled to be asked to talk about author Ransom Riggs’ newest “Miss Peregrine’s story”--A Map of Days which is on sale right now.

This is the fourth novel in the series and lead character Jacob Portman’s life in the United States is the setting for this newest adventure. Get your copy today! (It makes for a great gift, by the way.)

In this ep the Margos discuss :

Clips Featured:

  • Stephen King interviewed by MPR’s “Talking Volumes” in 2009
  • Carrie  1976 trailer
  • Carrie White being told she is a sinner by her mother
  • Miss Collins (Betty Buckley) talks with Tommy Ross and Sue Snell
  • Carrie unleashes her power at the prom
  • Outro Music: Carrie closing credits (Music by Pino Donaggio)

Boo! We are bringing on some Stephen King cult classics just in time for Halloween.

Margo D. & Patrick have a blast talking about the amazing movie and its journey as a pet project of producer Dino DeLaurentis to Gary Busey’s amazing ad-libbed performance.

In this episode the Margo & Patrick discuss:

  • Key differences between the novella and movie
  • Choices made by first time director Daniel Attius
  • The ridiculous werewolf costume and what the director should have done with the last scene

“The Haunting of Hill House"

(Netflix Series Review & Replay of April 2018 Ep)

The Margos take on a listener-suggested episode--The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson and boy did we have fun with this gem of a novel and film! (Not the 1999 remake, however)

Margo D. in the pre-show talks about the amazing Netflix adaptation and how it differs from 1963's version.

Jackson is by far one of the most intriguing authors we have covered and though she only lived to be 48 (spoiler alert) her work has inspired the greats including Stephen King, Neil Gaiman, Richard Matheson and Joyce Carol Oates.

Jackson’s complicated life is discussed in this episode along with the influential film (titled The Haunting) directed by the much-admired Robert Wise. Book Vs Movie--which did we like better? Click on the link below to find out!

Main topics covered in this episode:

  • The life story of Shirley Jackson and how her early (family friendly) work inspired moms all over the country--including peer Erma Bombeck.
  • Why she chose to write about fun, family life and horror stories. (Thanks to a rather cold mother.)
  • Her strained marriage which exasperated her health issues
  • The leads of the 1963 movie including Julie Harris, Claire Bloom, Richard Johnson and Russ Tamblyn.
  • The spiral staircase scene and how it was achieved
  • How the sexuality of the Theodora character is handled in both the book and film
  • The divine wardrobe by Mary Quant
  • The main differences between the 1959 novel and the 1963 film.

Clips Featured:

  • The Haunting of Hill House  Netflix trailer
  • The Haunting of Hill House (1963 movie trailer)
  • The “big” haunting scene with Julie Harris, Claire Bloom, Richard Johnson, and Russ Tamblyn.
  • Russ Tamblyn explains how the staircase scene was created (and in real life, very safe.)
  • Outro music from Humphrey Searle
  • Top of the show promo from the ladies at the History Goes Bump podcast

Book Vs Movie

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”

The Washing Irving Short Story Classic  Vs the Tim Burton Movie

The Margos are back and talking about spooky books & movies since, duh--it’s October! This is our favorite month of the year and we have so much fun talking about one of our best-loved stories from our childhood-- The Legend of Sleepy Hollow written by the fascinating Washington Irving.  The only hard part about this episode was deciding which version of the movie we should cover (there are several!) In the end, we decided to stick with one of our favorite directors, Tim Burton and his reimaging of the tale-- Sleepy Hollow.

We begin by looking at the incredible life of the author and how a yellow fever epidemic (prevalent in his childhood) made him familiar with the ghost stories of Hudson Valley, New York. Also, how the youngest of eleven children named for the first President of the United States took his lifelong love of writing and history to become America’s first famous “man of letters.”

(If you are a fan of New York City trivia and/or the origin of Christmas traditions--you will be especially happy with this ep!)

After that, we once again go into the film archives of Tim Burton and check out his unique take on not only the character of the historically smarmy, school teacher and not-handsome-at-all Ichabod Crane (played as a hot NYC police investigator by Johnny Depp) and the plot of the story which here centers around magic and spells.

So which did the Margos like better? Book or Movie? Check out the link below to find out!

In this ep the Margos discuss :

  • The NBC Halloween special which starred Jeff Goldblum and is unfortunately not available by streaming service.
  • The 1949 Disney movie (The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad) that scared both Margos in our childhoods.
  • The opportunity to choose from over 40 different versions of the audiobook.
  • How the term Nickerbocker (“The Nicks,”) Gotham and the phrase “the almighty dollar” are all attributed to Washington Irving.
  • The various interpretations of the short story and the meaning behind Ichabod’s disappearance.
  • The incredible look of Tim Burton movies and the art direction by Rick Heinrichs and Peter Young who won the Academy Award in 2000.
  • The main differences between the short story and movie.
  • Plus, we are movie trivia and our thoughts on the casting including Christina Ricci, Christopher Walken, and Miranda Richardson.

Clips Featured:

  • Ichabod by Bing Crosby and Jud Conlon’s Rhythmaries (Ichabod 1949)
  • Sleepy Hollow  trailer
  • The story behind the Headless Horseman
  • Outro Music: The Headless Horseman by Bing Crosby and Jud Conlon’s Rhythmaries (Ichabod 1949)

Book Vs Movie Podcast (Replay)

Frankenstein”

The Margos take on the wildest adaptation of the show’s history with the sublime Frankenstein compared to the frankly ridiculous Kenneth Branagh 1994 film.

The Margos get very gothic and silly sometimes trying to wrap their heads around Mary Shelley ’s venerated classic novel with Henry V director Kenneth Branagh’s wildly acted and directed film. How crazy is this adaptation? How about a dance sequence between a zombie Helena Bonham Carter and Robert De Niro as “the monster?”

This film is completely cray-cray but the backstory of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley is one of the greatest tales of 19th Century literature and we definitely dive into her fascinating life story. Plus, all of the machinations that led to the publishing of her book in 1818 and the revisions in the 1831 version.

Also, we are SO lucky to have Penguin Books sponsor this episode! The Margos are thrilled to be asked to talk about author Ransom Riggs’ newest “Miss Peregrine’s story”--A Map of Days which is in bookstores now! This is the fourth novel in the series and lead character Jacob Portman’s life in the United States is the setting for this newest adventure. Be sure to get your copy today!

Also, in this episode we discuss:

  • Fan theories about whether or not this is a feminist novel and writer Sady Doyle ’s incredible fan theory about who the creature is based on!
  • Kenneth Branagh’s  insane adaptation (and shirtless performance)
  • The different actors who played the creature over the years.
  • The incredible life of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley and the inspirations for her book
  • The "Year Without a Summer"
  • How truly awful the score and screenplay are by some normally talented people.
