Book Vs. Movie Podcast (Replay)

"How the Grinch Stole Christmas" by Dr. Seuss

The 1957 Children's Classic Vs.

The 1966 TV special & the 2000 Ron Howard-directed Film

The Margos get into the holiday spirit talking about the all-time holiday favorite "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" by Dr. Seuss. In this episode, we explore the differences between 1957 children's classic book and the two filmed properties of it (the 1966 TV classic and the 2000 rowdy Jim Carey version.)

Which did the Margos like best? You need to click on the link below to find out.

By the way, we know that some people are interested in hearing about the new Benedict Cumberbatch animated film "The Grinch." However, we never cover films that are currently in movie theaters and are NOT easily available online/streaming so you will have to wait until this time next year to hear our thoughts about it. (We are sure it is pretty great because he is a smart, classy dude.0

Now, please enjoy this episode originally recorded in 2016 (after that very memorable election.)

Topics we cover here:

  • The backstory of Theodore Seuss Geisel and his less than cheery view of children
  • Figuring out between John Ford, Tom Ford, and Glenn Ford
  • His San Diego roots
  • Dr. Seuss's left-leaning politics
  • The thinking behind the story of the Grinch
  • The voice actors in the TV special
  • How Jim Carey won the part
  • The 8-hour grueling makeup sessions with a dyed, yak-furred suit (yikes!)
  • The insane art direction in the movie (The Margos are NOT fans)
  • Taylor Momson's wonderful performance

Book Vs Movie podcast

Love, Simon”

The 2015 novel Vs the 2018 movie

The Margos are back in high school with this super-charming story of a teenager, Simon Spier, who is hiding a big secret from his friends and family.  Well, except for one person whom he emails daily but has no idea who he is as they use fake names to communicate. You see, Simon (who identifies as “Jacques” in his emails with “Blue”) is gay and struggling with his growing sexual interest.

Simon is loved by his parents and friends and feels mostly safe in his Atlanta-adjacent home but he still worries about being bullied in high school by not well-meaning jocks and bullies. Plus, he worries about disappointing his parents (though they come across as being very open-minded in both the novel and film.)

In fact, everything seems to be going well for Simon until fellow student Martin finds out his secret and blackmails him into setting him up with Abby (who is the first person Simon comes out to and that causes a problem with his best friend Leah. Lots of “friend” drama here!)

The book (titled Simon Vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda) debuted in 2015 by first-time novelist Becky Albertalli who spent years working as a clinical psychologist working mainly with teenagers. It was a big hit upon its release and was soon sold to be adapted into the film.

In this show, we discuss the differences between book and movie, and there are several to dive into here. Which version did the Margos like better? Check out the link below to find out!

We are sponsored by Penguin Books in this ep!

Natalie C. Parker, author of the Beware the Wild duology offers her own feminist take on an adventure with Seafire, which follows Caledonia Styx, the captain of an all-female ship, on her quest to save her brother and take down a vicious warlord’s powerful fleet.

This is the first book in a trilogy about Caledonia whose family was killed by warlord Aric Athair and his bloodthirsty army of Bullets. She captains the ship Mors Navis with a crew of women and girls like her who lost their homes and families because of Aric and his men.

Parker is a lifelong fan of SciFi but has always felt a frustration with the lack of strong female characters in her favorite books. In fact, Natalie remembers telling her mother at a young age that

In regards The Hobbit, “MOM, do you know how many girls are in this book? ONE. And she was a spider.”

This book is thrilling, makes for an excellent gift and will be on sale 50% off the weekend between Friday, November 22nd and Sunday, November 24th at all Barnes & Nobles locations throughout the U.S.!

In this ep the Margos discuss :

Book Vs Movie Podcast

The Princess Bride”

The Margos(once again) dissect the differences between the 1973 William Goldman novel from the 1987 cult classic film directed by Rob Reiner

(RIP William Goldman 1931-2018)

Inconceivable! The Margos decided to redo, replay and honor the late, great William Goldman in this Book Vs. Movie podcast ep by taking on one more time (and even better) the book/movie The Princess Bride. We are always surprised to find that our listeners did not realize that the beloved classic movie was at one time a book. And that said book is very meta and multi-layered. Spoiler--we love BOTH of the versions of The Princess Bride and are so excited to be able to talk about it all once again!

In this episode we discuss:

  • The origins of the novel and its long history in turnaround
  • The plethora of differences between the book and movie
  • How the movie eventually became a cult classic
  • The incredible cast including Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, Andre the Giant, Chris Sarandon and Billy Crystal.
  • Andrea the Giant’s real proportions and the experience he had making the movie

Book Vs Movie Podcast

The Great Gatsby

One of the Most Revered Works of Art from the 20th Century  Vs.

the 2013 Baz Luhrmann Adaptation

Get your Flapper outfits ready and fill that tub with bootleg gin--The Margos go deep into the backstory of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. Though it is now considered one of the most important American novels of all time when it was published in 1925--it sold half as well as his previous novels and Fitzgerald felt like a failure.

The life of Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda Sayre is one of the most tragic we have yet to cover and we get into all of the details in this show. Plus. we dissect between the book, the audiobook narrated by Jake Gyllenhaal and the rather frenetic movie directed by Australian Baz Luhrmann.

Once again, we are SO lucky to have Penguin Books sponsor this episode! The Margos are thrilled to be asked to talk about author Ransom Riggs’ newest “Miss Peregrine’s story”--A Map of Days which is on sale right now.

This is the fourth novel in the series and lead character Jacob Portman’s life in the United States is the setting for this newest adventure. Get your copy today! (It makes for a great gift, by the way.)

So between the book and movie, which did the Margos like more? Click on the link below to find out.

In this episode the Margos discuss :

  • The life of F. Scott Fitzgerald and his tragic death
  • How much the lead character, Nick Carroway, resembles the author
  • Our favorite sections of the book
  • The casting of the movie including Tobey McGuire, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, and Leonardo DiCaprio.
  • The pace and art direction of the film
  • The unusual soundtrack

  • Jake Gyllenhaal reading from the audiobook of The Great Gatsby
  • The Great Gatsby  trailer
  • “Meet Mr. Gatsby”

Book Vs Movie

Ready Player One”

The Margos Put on Their Game-Faces in This Hyper 80s Ep

The Margos are feeling stoked about this 1980s-centric soaked episode talking about a much-requested book/movie Ready Player One from first time author Ernest Cline. This pop-culture stuffed tale features more gamer references than anything we have remotely covered in the past so we are a bit nervous about how accurate we will be, (Be kind if you are a first-time listener!)

Both book and movie have the same basic plot--set in the miserable 2040s, Wade Watts is a teenage orphan who wishes for a life outside the stacked trailer parks. In fact, most people are unhappy with the real world and choose to escape to the virtual world known as OASIS. Created by shy genius James Halliday, the OASIS survives after his recent death but he left several clues (“easter eggs”) for one person to discover and inherit his entire fortune and corporation.

Wade (who goes by the moniker Parzival in OASIS) along with his crush Art3mis, best friend Aech and pals Daito and Sho is determined to find every easter egg in the hunt and his vast knowledge of both popular and obscure pop culture trivia sends him on an amazing journey.

Cline sold the book and movie within days of each other in 2010 and serves as the co-screenwriter of the Steven Spielberg adaptation. (We seem to cover a ton of Spielberg on this show!)

Which version did the Margo like better? Check out the link at the bottom of the page to find out.

We are sponsored by Penguin Books in this ep! Marie Lu follows up her New York Times bestseller WARCROSS with WILDCARD which follows the story of Emika Chen who just made it out of the Warcross Championships alive and is now seeking to end Hideo’s plan for good. Emika joins the Phoenix Riders on the streets of Tokyo and there is a bounty on her head. How far will she go to ultimately take down the man she loves?

Lu (who is also the author of the mega-hit “Legends” series) draws from her personal experience in the video game industry where she is creating a world that is revolved around a game that takes over the world. This is a thriller that serves as a satisfying ending to this unique tale. It’s available in hardcover, Kindle, and as an audiobook.

In this ep the Margos discuss :

  • The interesting “slam poetry” past of author Ernest Cline
  • The major differences between the book and the Spielberg movie
  • The plethora of pop culture references featured in both
  • Which artists and musicians the Margos feel were wrongfully excluded
  • The casting of the movie including Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Lena Waithe, Ben Mendelsohn, Mark Rylance and Simon Pegg.

Clips Featured:

  • Ready Player One first trailer
  • Parzival/.Wade (Tye Sheridan) and Art3mis/ Samantha (Olivia Cooke) at the nightclub
  • Sorrento (Ben Mendelsohn) meets Wade
  • Aech/Helen in “The Shining
  • James Halliday (Mark Rylance) gives Wade the “jade egg”
  • Outro Music: Jump by Van Halen
