Book Vs Movie

“Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children”

The Ransom Riggs Book vs the Tim Burton Film

The Margos delve into the world of fantasy in this episode discussing the Ranson Riggs’ Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children which spent 70 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list in 2012 and spawned two sequels Hollow City and Library of Souls.

Normally Margo P. doesn’t go for the scary stuff but when her preteen told her this was her favorite book of all time and though she will never see the movie (she loathes adaptations--go figure!) she thought we should give it a go.

The book is a wonderful journey of a young man exploring his grandfather’s old photographs that lead him on an amazing journey on a Welsh Island. Does that sound boring? Believe us, it is a very funny and entertaining read with incredible vintage photos telling the story and a very funny & charming lead in the character of Jacob Portman.

So how does the Tim Burton movie stack up compared to the YA novel?

In this episode we discuss:

  • The excellent Audible book ready by actor Jesse Bernstein.
  • Eva Green’s portrayal as Miss Peregrine.
  • What scenes are different between book and movie (Jake  (Asa Butterfield) meeting Emma (Ella Purnell) the first time!)
  • How Miss Peregrine’s capture is handled between the two.
  • The character Barron (Samuel L. Jackson)
  • Switching Emma’s superpower (fire) with less character Olive (breath)
  • Jake’s truncated backstory between book & film
  • The fight scenes & CGI at the end of the film
  • The changes in character of Dr. Golan (Allison Janey)
  • How really mean the movie dad (Chris O’Dowd) is versus the book.

Outro Music: “Bedtime Stories” by Mike Higham & Matthew Margeson (Miss Peregrine soundtrack)

Attention all you Greasers & Socs--The Margos have committed to investingating both the SH Hinton 1967 classic novel and the Francis Ford Coppola 1983 film that still makes millions of girls scream with delight.

In this epsiode we compare and contrast the book vs the film including what we liked (and didn't like) about each and along the way offer trivia, tidbits and spoilers aplenty.

Whether you are a Sodapop kind of girl or long for a bad boy like Dallas--the Margos give their honest take on what works in the book and the strange choices that almost derailed the film. (Oops--are we giving something away here?)

Highlights of this episode include full-on Patrick Swayze and Rob Lowe swooning, the potential scariness of a drive-in in Tulsa and the "huh" song from Stevie Wonder that plays on the soundtrack.

The "Margos" tackle their next episode of "Book Vs Movie" with the Nick Hornby 1995 novel "High Fidelity." The international best-selling book was turned into a hit film in 2000 with director Stephen Frears at the helm and starring John Cusack moving the action from London to Chicago. So which was better?

Do you prefer your lead as a melancholy loner or an angry indie-brat? The Margos spoil away as they discuss the differences between the two in order to hash out with "High Fidelity" which was better--the book or the movie? (Contains many spoilers!)

"Book Vs Movie" tackles the 2012 bestselling thriller by Gillian Flynn and compares it to how it was realized on film by David Fincher.

Margo D. (Brooklyn Fit Chick) and Margo P. (She's Nacho Mama's Blog) talk about both the movie and book and discuss the merits (and misfires) in each.

Did the movie "ruin" or "fix" the contoversial ending? How was Reese Witherspoon involved with the project? How many pairs of underwear were used in THAT SCENE?

WARNING: Plenty of spoilers here with all plot twists revelaed!

This episode of Book Vs. Movie we talk about the 1996 Roman a Clef novel "Primary Colors" by Joe Klein which is, let's face facts, his take on Bill Clinton and the 1992 Presidential Campaign.  Then we discuss the 1998 movie directed by the late (and legendary) director Mike Nichols.

The Margos talk about which they liked better and give all sorts of trivia and behind-the-scenes gossip.

Also discussed, the aging makeup of John Travolta, "Stuttering" John Melendez vs Gennifer Flowers, the traeatment of gays and minorities in the novel, the wonder that was Larry Hagman, the awfulness of politics and much more.

We don't beat around the bush here. We dare to answer the question--which was better, the book or the film? See if you agree!

Margo D. and Margo P. discuss the creepy classic "Carrie" and try to decide which is better. The 1974 novel? The 1976 film?

We disect the plot and revel in major spoilers while discussing the powers of TK, Stephen King's inspiration for Carrie White, the multiple iterations of "Carrie" (including a musical!) and the level of scariness between book & film.

Book Vs. Movie also gives behind the scenes tidbits on the movie making process while giving major props to Jack Fisk (listen to the episode to know who that is!)

The Book: A big time firm based in Memphis, only does tax work and never hires women or people of color draws no suspicion from newbie lawyer until he is in WAY over his head.

The Movie: Tom Cruise is a crackerjack gymnast/baskbetball star for Harvard (stay with us) who joins THE FIRM and becomes emeshed in their shenanigans. In the meantime he romances every woman he meets and springs his genius brother from jail.

Show that needs to be on TNT immediatley: The Eddie Lomax Law Firm starring 90s Gary Busey and today's Holly Hunter.

Warning: 90s fashion, absurd chase scenes and racist sconces abound in the film.
