Book Vs Movie

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants”

The 2001 YA Classic Novel Vs. the Beloved 2005 Movie

We needed a break here from the intense and decided to dip back into the YA novel waters with the lovely first installment (of five!) of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants from author Ann Brashares and what a delight it is!

In this episode, the Margos talk about the main plot points in the book with the characters of Lena Kaligaris, Tibby Rollins, Bridget Creeland and Carmen Lowell and their unique friendship. It’s such a sweet, loving tale--we can’t stop gushing about it!

What’s not to love about this story, really? It has strong female characters, an interesting premise, summer vacation locales, real family issues and a great message about keeping your friends close and embracing every wonderful opportunity that comes your way.

We compare all of this with the 2005 film directed by Ken Kwapis and stars Amber Tamblyn, Alexis Bledel, America Ferrera, and Blake Lively.

So between the novel and the movie--which did we like better? Click the link at the bottom to find out.

This episode is once again sponsored by Penguin Random House!

All for One  (Book three of the “Alex & Eliza Trilogy”) by Melissa De La Cruz

  1. New York, New York.

As a young nation begins to take shape, Alexander Hamilton and Elizabeth Schuyler are on top of the world. They're the toast of the town, keeping New York City buzzing with tales of their lavish parties, of Eliza's legendary wit, and of Alex's brilliant legal mind.

But new additions to Alex & Eliza's little family mean change is afoot in the Hamilton household. When they agree to take in an orphaned teenage girl along with Eliza's oldest brother, John Schuyler, Eliza can't help but attempt a match. It's not long before sparks start to fly . . . if only Eliza can keep herself from interfering too much in the course of true love. After all, she and Alex have an arrival of their own to plan for, though Alex's latest case brings a perilous threat that may destroy everything.

Book Vs Movie (Replay)

The Godfather”

The Margos Leave the Gun and Take the Cannolis in this Ep

We are here to make an offer you can’t refuse--a redo of Mario Puzo’s The Godfather. The Margos originally covered this book and movies (well, really movies) three years ago when we were both fighting the flu.  The result was kind of a meandering mess which we have always been embarrassed by vowed to redo one day as the material calls for nothing less than our best efforts.

This episode is a reflection of our years of fondness for the material and how far we have come along as podcasters. The 1969 novel by Puzo is a real treat to discuss and who doesn’t love talking about Marlon Brando and Al  Pacino? You can listen to the episode in the link below.

In this ep the Margos discuss :

  • The backstory of author Mario Puzo and why he felt compelled to tell the story about a mafia family even though he had no expertise on the subject.
  • The many, many ways the book is different from the two movies it is based on.
  • Why Francis Ford Coppola has such a complicated history with these films.
  • The cast of the movie including Al Pacino, Marlon Brando, James Caan, Robert DeNiro, Talia Shire, Robert Duvall and Diane Keaton.
  • Our favorite scenes from both films
  • Plus, movie trivia and more!

Clips Featured:

  • Author Mario Puzo & Screenwriter Francis Ford Coppola talk about The Godfather script
  • The Godfather  trailer
  • Don Corleone (Marlon Brando) making deals on his daughter’s wedding day
  • Moe Green (Alex Rocco) with Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) and Fredo Corleone (John Cazale)
  • Outro Music “Theme to the Godfather” Carmine Coppola

Book Vs Movie

I Am Legend”

The Richard Matheson Novel Vs. the Will Smith Movie

The Margos are back and ready to get a little post-apocalyptic with the 1954 classic novella I Am Legend from prolific storyteller Richard Matheson. Set in 1970s Southern California, the novel is about  the life of Robert Neville, the seemingly only survivor of a worldwide pandemic which causes people to turn into vampires.

Robert’s life is filled with drinking, madness and fear and Matheson’s writing becomes venerated by future horror writers like Stephen King.

The film has been remade three times and the Margos decided to focus on the 2007 Will Smith film directed by Francis Lawrence (even though we both forgot about THAT dog scene--yikes!)

So between the novel and the movie--which did we like better? Click the link at the bottom to find out.

In this ep the Margos discuss:

  • The life and incredible body of work of Richard Matheson
  • The main aspects of the book and how it is different from the 2007 movie
  • The fact that the dog featured in the movie is still alive!
  • The main cast members including Smith as Robert Neville, Alice Braga (Anna,) Charlie Tahan (Ethan,) Salli Richardson-Whitfield (Zoe Neville,) Willow Smith (Marley Neville,) and Emma Thompson (Dr. Alice Krippin)

Clips Featured:

  • I Am Legend (original trailer)
  • Robert Neville talks with Anna about Bob Marley
  • Outro music Three Little Birds  by Bob Marley

Book Vs. Movie Podcast

The Stephen King Bonus Ep

With Deana Marie (Twisted Philly)

Pet Sematary (Original & Remake)

It’s time for another Stephen King Bonus ep and Margo D. is joined by Deana Marie of the Twisted Philly podcast to talk about the remake of Pet Sematary directed by Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer (Starry Eyes) and comparing it to the 1989 movie directed by Mary Lambert.

Plus, we delve into the 1983 novel that was inspired by author King’s stay at a residence in Maine for a year that was located by a busy roadway. In real life, his daughter’s cat was run over by a truck and his son was almost struck down by one as well.

King took these events and created the creepy story of the Creed family who moves to Ludlow, Maine to escape the city life. Instead of finding tranquility they discover their home is located near a pet cemetery that has some supernatural powers.

So between the book and two films--what do we think of Pet Semetary? Click on the link below.

Book Vs Movie

Gone With the Wind”

The Margaret Mitchell Pulitzer Prize-Winning Novel Vs the David O. Selznick Film

Fiddly dee! The Margos are feeling the vapors as we finally tackle Margaret Mitchell’s classic novel Gone With the Wind and this time, us two Yankees admit we need some help understanding the history of the book and its author. So for the first time ever--we asked another podcaster to join us for this discussion--Alicia from the Trashy Divorces podcast!

Alicia is a sassy southern bred, Atlanta-based podcaster who loves this book and has tons to say about the iconic author. The Margos found the material to be challenging (to say the least!) so we really wanted to give the fans the opportunity to hear from a Mitchell Stan.

Now the big question, which version did the Margos like better? Check out the link below to hear for yourself!

This episode is once again sponsored by Penguin Random House!

The Last Voyage of Poe Blythe by Ally Condie

Who do you become when you have nothing left to lose?

There is something Poe Blythe, the seventeen-year-old captain of the Outpost’s last mining ship, wants far more than the gold they tear from the Serpentine River.

Poe has vowed to annihilate the river raiders who robbed her of everything two years ago. But as she navigates the treacherous waters of the Serpentine and realizes there might be a traitor among her crew, she must also reckon with who she has become, who she wants to be, and the ways love can change and shape you. Even—and especially—when you think all is lost.

Ally Condie, the international bestselling author of the Matched trilogy, returns with an intricately crafted and emotionally gripping story of one young woman’s journey to move beyond the grief and anger that control her and find the inner strength to chart her own course.

The Last Voyage of Poe Blythe is one of the most anticipated YA novels of 2019 author Ally Condie will be going on a national tour to promote this Spring & Summer.

You can follow her on social media @AllyCondie @PenguinTeen #PoeBlythe

  • Why the book & film are considered to be controversial
  • The incredible cast including Clark Gable (Rhett Butler,) Vivien Leigh (Scarlett O’Hara,) Leslie Howard (Ashley Wilkes,) Olivia de Havilland (Melanie Hamilton,) Thomas Mitchell (Gerald O’Hara,) Barbara O’Neill (Ellen O’Hara,) Hattie McDaniel (Mammy,) Butterfly McQueen (Prissy,) George Reeves (Brent Tarleton,) Fred Crane (Stuart Tarleton,) and Oscar Polk (Pork.)
