Book Vs Movie

In Cold Blood”

Truman Capote’s “Non-Fiction Novel” Vs the Richard Brooks Movie

The Margos tackle true crime in this episode that features Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood which was a sensation when it was first published in 1966 and started a new genre called the “non-fiction novel.” Capote first read about the Clutter family murders in early December 1959 in a small section of the New York Times. Based on that one clip, he decided to go to Holcomb, Kansas (along with lifelong friend Harper “Nell” Lee as his assistant) on behalf of The New Yorker to get the story about how a small town handles a horrific crime.

It never occurred to Capote that though he himself comes from a small town (Monroeville, AL) his years of celebrity as a New York City writer and novelist would enchant even the most grounded folks in Holcomb. With Lee’s help, Truman spent years getting to know the residents of Holcomb along with dozens of members of the police and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation to get close to the killers Perry Edward Smith and Richard Eugene “Dick” Hickock.

Capote became a millionaire after its publication but his friendship with Lee faltered and he was said to be haunted by the executions of Smith and Hickock for the rest of his life. In Cold Blood is now the second best-selling true crime book of all time behind Helter Skelter by Vincent Bugliosi.

The story of the creation of the book was the premise of two movies in 2005--Capote starring Philip Seymour Hoffman (who won the Academy Award for Best Actor) and Infamous with Toby Jones.

In this ep the Margos discuss :

  • The incredible life and sad decline of Truman Capote
  • The true story of the Clutters and how disappointed their friends and family were by Truman’s limited view of them
  • How Truman Capote created a sexier image of Smith and Hickock by using photos from celebrated photographer Richard Avedon
  • The way In Cold Blood introduced true crime to the masses
  • Movie trivia and the incredible use of “real” people and locations to give it a “cinema verite” look and feel
  • The casting of Robert Blake (Perry Smith,) Scott Wilson (Dick Hickock,) John Forsythe (Al Dewey) and Brenda Currin (Nancy Clutter.)
  • The truly awful remake from 1996 starring Anthony Edwards (Dick Hickock) and Eric Roberts (Perry Smith.)
  • The excellent mini-series that features interviews.] with the descendants of Herb & Bonnie Clutter--Cold Blooded.
  • The episode about the murders from the ID TV A Crime to Remember

Clips Featured:

  • In Cold Blood  trailer
  • Truman Capote describing why he took on the Clutter murder as his first non-fiction novel (From the mini-series Cold Blooded)
  • Dick Hickcock talks his way into writing a bad check
  • Perry Smith talks about his abusive childhood
  • Truman Capote talks about how to write about difficult topics (from the 1966 Maysles Brothers documentary “A Visit with Truman Capote

Stephen King Bonus Ep

"The Stand”

The 1994 Movie Cast & Our Picks for the Cast of the Upcoming TV series

It’s another special “Stephen King Bonus Ep” and Margo D. and Deana Marie of the Twisted Philly are back and wanting to discuss quite possibly the biggest piece of Stephen King news that we have heard in ages. For many years there have been rumors of adapting King’s 1978 novel The Stand to either a TV series or as a film trilogy.

So far we have had one adaptation--Mick Garris’ 1994 mini-series which ran on ABC-TV and is either beloved or reviled by hardcore fans.

None other than Ben Affleck himself wanted to create a movie trilogy but the project never took off and remained in turnaround.

So CBS All Access decided to say “hold my beer!” and create their own 2020 limited TV series which has King fans buzzing.

The story is about an apocalyptic flu virus (“Captain Trips”)  that is spread across the U.S. and wipes out 99% of the population is one of King’s most revered works. The people who survive the flu break up into two camps:

  • The “good people” (including Stu Redmond, Frannie Goldsmith, and Mother Abigail Freemantle) head off to Boulder,  CO.
  • The “evil people” (including Trashcan Man and Lloyd Henreid) make Las Vegas their home

In 1990 King released an unabridged version of the novel with an additional 400+ pages. There are scenes including a character called “The Kid” and Stu meeting Jim Morrison--but the1994 mini-series is mostly based on the abridged version.

Will CBS All Access include anything from the 1990 version?

In this ep, Margo D. & Deana are all about casting. We go in depth on how we feel the 1994 casting of our favorite characters and then each pick our personal choice for the new show. CBS casting people--please let us know if you are listening!

You can listen to this episode using the link below.

In this special Stephen King bonus episode Margo & Deana discuss:

  • A quick story behind The Stand and why SK fans revere it so much.
  • Our personal history with both the novel and the 1994 TV mini-series
  • Our favorite (and least favorite) casting choices for the mini-series
  • Our top casting picks for the new TV series
  • Just how close to the book will the shows be compared to the 1994 mini-series?
