Book Vs Movie (replay)

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants”

The 2001 YA Classic Novel Vs. the Beloved 2005 Movie

We needed a break here from the intense and decided to dip back into the YA novel waters with the lovely first installment (of five!) of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants from author Ann Brashares and what a delight it is!

In this episode, the Margos talk about the main plot points in the book with the characters of Lena Kaligaris, Tibby Rollins, Bridget Creeland and Carmen Lowell and their unique friendship. It’s such a sweet, loving tale--we can’t stop gushing about it!

What’s not to love about this story, really? It has strong female characters, an interesting premise, summer vacation locales, real family issues and a great message about keeping your friends close and embracing every wonderful opportunity that comes your way.

We compare all of this with the 2005 film directed by Ken Kwapis and stars Amber Tamblyn, Alexis Bledel, America Ferrera, and Blake Lively.

So between the novel and the movie--which did we like better? Click the link at the bottom to find out.

In this ep the Margos discuss:

  • The backstory of author Ann Brashares
  • The way sadness, family, and sexuality are discussed in both the book and movie
  • The major differences between the book and the film
  • The amazing chemistry between the leads in the movie
  • How much we now want to travel to Greece!

Clips Featured:

  • The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (original trailer)
  • Tibby (Lively) flirting with Eric (Mike Vogel)
  • Carmen ( Ferrera) confronts her father (played by Bradley Whitford) about abandoning her

Book Vs Movie

Shrek

Yes, it was a book first and the original star was Chris Farley!

Did you not know that Shrek was a book first? Well, it certainly was and the Margos are so excited to talk about the interesting beginnings of the 1990 children’s book by author/illustrator William Steig

At first, Steven Spielberg (he sure turns up pon the show quite a bit!) bought the rights for Dreamworks and wanted Steve Martin involved. Later on, Chris Farley worked on the film with Eddie Murphy and was 90% done with dialogue when he died in 1997.

Mike Myers came on board in 2000 and a Scottish ogre was born.

The movie, directed by Andrew Adamson, (we talked a bit about him in our "Chronicles of Narnia" episode) stars Myers, Murphy, Cameron Diaz, and John Lithgow became a smash and produced two sequels.

In this episode, we talk about the many differences between the original book & the movie to decide which we like better.

In this ep the Margos discuss:

  • The background of author & illustrator William Steig
  • The basic differences between the book & movie.
  • How the script changed over the years
  • The cast of the movie including Meyers (Shrek,) Murphy (Donkey,) Diaz (Princess Fiona,) Lithgow (Lord Farquaad,) and Vincent Cassell (Monsieur Hood.)

Clips Featured:

  • Shrek trailer
  • "Shrek is like an onion"
  • "Fiona Vs Monsieur Hood"
  • "The muffin man!"
  • Outro music I’m a Believer” by Smash Mouth

Book Vs Movie

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (Replay)

The Story Behind the 2008 Novel & the 2018 Movie

Are you ready for a little 1940s weepy? The Margos sure are as they talk about the novel The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society that was started by Mary Ann Shaffer who brought on her niece Annie Barrows to help her finish when she became ill. Shaffer spent some time fogged in at the airport on the island of Guernsey which is located by the English Channel.

After checking their local bookstore she found out the island was occupied by the Germans in World War 2 and she became obsessed with the idea of placing a historical fiction story based there.  The novel is told in an epistolary format and features an array of intriguing characters who come together under terrible circumstances and create their own magical world.

Taking place in 1946, London-based writer Juliet Ashton is stymied on what to write after her last book was a disappointment in sales. After starting a correspondence with a group of book club members based in Guernsey she impulsively decides to visit the island and her life is upended by the power of love.

The film is from director Mike Newell and at the time of this recording, is streaming on Netflix.

Book Vs Movie

The Lion, The With & The Wardrobe

The fantastical tale is the subject of this fantastical episode

The Margos travel to Narnia and back to bring you the story about fascinating author C.S. Lewis and his classic children’s tales that make up The Chronicles of Narnia. Lewis, an Irishman who attended schools in England, went from being an avowed atheist to a proponent of Christianity and he used his stories based on Pevensie children as the basis of having people understanding the power of Jesus.

It all begins with the 1950 publication of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe which tells the tale of Lucy, Peter, Edmund, and Susan who are living in England during World War 2. One day they find a mysterious wardrobe and travel to the land of Narnia where they are known as the “sons of Adam” and “daughters of Eve” and animals can talk just like humans.

The White Witch is in charge of Narnia and she keeps everyone in perpetual winter (and never Christmas! Aslan the lion is her nemesis. The Christian allegories write themselves in this very entertaining tale.

The movie directed by Andrew Adamson stars interesting character actors Tilda Swinton, James McAvoy, and Jim Broadbent and has an immense (supposed) $180 million budget and the special effects are next-level great.

So between book & movie--which did we like better? Click on the link below to find out!

In this ep the Margos discuss:

  • The life story of C.S. Lewis & the history of the Narnia books
  • The basic differences between the 1950 book & 2005 movie.
  • The cast of the movie Tilda Swinton (White Witch,) James McAvoy (Mr. Tumnus,) Jim Broadbent (Professor Kirke,) Liam Neeson (Aslan,)  Georgie Henley (Lucy,) Skandar Keynes (Edmund,) William Moseley (Peter,) and Anna Popplewell (Susan.)

  • The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe  trailer
  • The White Witch speaks with Aslan about the “traitor”
  • The children fight the wolves (melting ice scene)
