This originally ran last year. Enjoy!

In this episode we discuss:

  • The incredible work of Ira Levin
  • Mia Farrow’s incredible performance and offscreen troubles with husband Frank Sinatra (!)
  • The near perfect direction by Roman Polanski and how he frames his shots.

Book Vs Movie

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”

The Washing Irving Short Story Classic  Vs the Tim Burton Movie

The Margos are back and talking about spooky books & movies since, duh--it’s October! This is our favorite month of the year and we have so much fun talking about one of our best-loved stories from our childhood-- The Legend of Sleepy Hollow written by the fascinating Washington Irving.  The only hard part about this episode was deciding which version of the movie we should cover (there are several!) In the end, we decided to stick with one of our favorite directors, Tim Burton and his reimaging of the tale-- Sleepy Hollow.

We begin by looking at the incredible life of the author and how a yellow fever epidemic (prevalent in his childhood) made him familiar with the ghost stories of Hudson Valley, New York. Also, how the youngest of eleven children named for the first President of the United States took his lifelong love of writing and history to become America’s first famous “man of letters.”

(If you are a fan of New York City trivia and/or the origin of Christmas traditions--you will be especially happy with this ep!)

After that, we once again go into the film archives of Tim Burton and check out his unique take on not only the character of the historically smarmy, school teacher and not-handsome-at-all Ichabod Crane (played as a hot NYC police investigator by Johnny Depp) and the plot of the story which here centers around magic and spells.

So which did the Margos like better? Book or Movie? Check out the link below to find out!

In this ep the Margos discuss :

  • The NBC Halloween special which starred Jeff Goldblum and is unfortunately not available by streaming service.
  • The 1949 Disney movie (The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad) that scared both Margos in our childhoods.
  • The opportunity to choose from over 40 different versions of the audiobook.
  • How the term Nickerbocker (“The Nicks,”) Gotham and the phrase “the almighty dollar” are all attributed to Washington Irving.
  • The various interpretations of the short story and the meaning behind Ichabod’s disappearance.
  • The incredible look of Tim Burton movies and the art direction by Rick Heinrichs and Peter Young who won the Academy Award in 2000.
  • The main differences between the short story and movie.
  • Plus, we are movie trivia and our thoughts on the casting including Christina Ricci, Christopher Walken, and Miranda Richardson.

Clips Featured:

  • Ichabod by Bing Crosby and Jud Conlon’s Rhythmaries (Ichabod 1949)
  • Sleepy Hollow  trailer
  • The story behind the Headless Horseman
  • Outro Music: The Headless Horseman by Bing Crosby and Jud Conlon’s Rhythmaries (Ichabod 1949)

Book Vs Movie

Coraline”

Neil Gaiman’s Classic Novella Vs the Henry Selick Film

What would you do if your mother and father all of a sudden became entirely different (and scary) people? Coraline Jones is a young English girl who moves to an old house that is filled with interesting characters (such as Miss Spink, Miss Forcible and Mr. Bobo,) loving (yet kind of absent) parents and a bricked-up door leading to an adventure which tests the might and ingenuity of our heroine. (Spoiler--we really love this book & movie here!)

Coraline, written by illustrious author Neil Gaiman, was originally published in 2002 though he had been working on it since the 1980s in honor of his daughters Holly & Maddy. In fact, he originally sent to his editor in 1991 who deemed the theme “too scary” for kids. Thankfully, Gaiman kept working on it and the novel was awarded the Hugo Award for Best Novella in 2003. (The graphic novel featuring illustrations by P. Craig Russell is a real treat as well!)

Director Henry Selick (The Nightmare Before Christmas and James & the Giant Peach) helmed the 2009 film which was nominated as Best Animated Feature at the 2010 Academy Awards. A visual feast for the eyes, the movie Coraline takes the tale to a whole other level.

So which did the Margos like better? Book or Movie? Check out the link below to find out!

Also, we are SO lucky to have Penguin Books sponsor this episode! The Margos are thrilled to be asked to talk about author Ransom Riggs’ newest “Miss Peregrine’s story”--A Map of Days which you can pre-order now! (It goes on sale October 2, 2018.) This is the fourth novel in the series and lead character Jacob Portman’s life in the United States is the setting for this newest adventure. Be sure to pre-order your copy today!

In this ep the Margos discuss :

  • The incredible career of Neil Gaiman who is a master of short fiction, novels, comics, graphic novels, radio and movies (Whew! When does this man rest?)
  • Key changes in the adaptation including setting it in America and the character of “Wybie Lovat.”
  • The various forms of Coraline including the novel, graphic novel, audiobook read by the author and featuring music by The Gothic Archies.
  • The cast of voices including Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher, Jennifer Saunders, Dawn French, John Hodgman, and Keith David.
  • Plus, Neil Gaiman’s current plethora of projects, movie trivia and more!

Clips Featured:

  • Neil Gaiman reading from Coraline plus music from The Gothic Archies
  • Coraline  trailer
  • Coraline (Dakota Fanning) meets her Other Mother (Teri Hatcher) and Other Father (John Hodgman)
  • Coraline’s mother turns evil
  • Outro Music: Coraline soundtrack “End Credits” by Bruno Coulais

Book Vs Movie

A Wrinkle in Time”

The Margos Discover that Not All Things Featuring Oprah Are Made of Gold

The Margos dive into a children’s classic novel--A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle and offer their thoughts on the 1962 novel that spawned four sequels and earned the love of millions of fans all over the world. The story of a plucky 13-year-old heroine (Meg Murry) who is smart, awkward and lonely due to her father missing for over four years has inspired readers for decades to truly be themselves and trust their instincts.

L’Engle won the Newbery Medal in 1962 for her “junior novel” and its fans have been demanding for years a proper adaptation that honors the material. So does the 2018 film directed by Ava Duvernay make the cut? The Margos discuss in this episode which you can listen to using the link at the bottom of this post.

In this ep the Margos discuss :

  • The biography of author Madeleine L’Engle and common themes in her books
  • The changes made in the 2018 movie adaptation
  • The past films of director Ava Duvernay
  • The multiracial casting of the movie including Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Storm Reid, and Chris Pine

Book Vs Movie

The Godfather”

The Margos Leave the Gun and Take the Cannolis in this Mob-erific Ep

We are here to make an offer you can’t refuse--a redo of Mario Puzo’s The Godfather. The Margos originally covered this book and movies (well, really movies) three years ago when we were both fighting the flu.  The result was kind of a meandering mess which we have always been embarrassed by vowed to redo one day as the material calls for nothing less than our best efforts.

This episode is a reflection of our years of fondness for the material and how far we have come along as podcasters. The 1969 novel by Puzo is a real treat to discuss and who doesn’t love talking about Marlon Brando and Al  Pacino? You can listen to the episode in the link below.

In this ep the Margos discuss :

  • The backstory of author Mario Puzo and why he felt compelled to tell the story about a mafia family even though he had no expertise on the subject.
  • The many, many ways the book is different from the two movies it is based on.
  • Why Francis Ford Coppola has such a complicated history with these films.
  • The cast of the movie including Al Pacino, Marlon Brando, James Caan, Robert DeNiro, Talia Shire, Robert Duvall and Diane Keaton.
  • Our favorite scenes from both films
  • Plus, movie trivia and more!

Clips Featured:

  • Author Mario Puzo & Screenwriter Francis Ford Coppola talk about The Godfather script
  • The Godfather  trailer
  • Don Corleone (Marlon Brando) making deals on his daughter’s wedding day
  • Moe Green (Alex Rocco) with Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) and Fredo Corleone (John Cazale)

It’s time for another Stephen King bonus ep! SK superfans Margo D. and Deana of the Twisted Philly decided to take a look at the new Hulu series Castle Rock at their mid-season. So five episodes in are Margo and Deana impressed with the JJ Abrams produced show? Can they figure out the crazy plot? How many easter eggs can they find in each episode? Will they stick around for the whole series? (Well, I THINK we all know the answer to that one!)

You can listen to this episode by using the link below.

In this special Stephen King bonus episode Margo & Deana discuss:

  • The major King properties the show is based on

Book Vs Movie

Who Framed Roger Rabbit

Wait, it was based on a book?

The Margos were shocked to find out that the 1988 film Who Framed Roger Rabbit (directed by Robert Zemeckis) was based on a very dark book titled Who Censored Roger Rabbit by author Gary K. Wolf which meant, of course, we had to cover them both for our show. (Thanks to all of the members of our Facebook group for pointing us in this direction!)

The book was published in 1981 and is very different in both tone and attitude to the 1988 adaptation. In the “Censored” world--the characters are darker and meaner with totally different stakes than in the movie.

Disney, which produced the film, made some substantial changes in the look and with the characters featured making it much more kid-friendly (but still with some really scary in some scenes!)

So between the book and movie--which did the Margos like better? Check out the link below to find out!

In this ep the Margos discuss :

  • The true origin story of Roger Rabbit
  • The biggest differences between book and movie
  • How the “toons” speak in the book versus the movie
  • Why the author has continually sued Disney over profits he claims he is still owed
  • The cast of the movie including Bob Hoskins, Christopher Lloyd, Joanna Cassidy and Charles Fleischer
  • The women who voiced Jessica Rabbit
  • Plus, tons of trivia and tidbits

Clips Featured:

  • Who Framed Roger Rabbit  trailer
  • Why Eddie Valiant (Bob Hoskins) won’t work with toons
  • Jessica Rabbit (Kathleen Turner) meets Eddie
  • Roger Rabbit (Charles Fleischer) “Drinks the Drink”

Book Vs Movie

Catch Me If You Can

The 1980 nonfiction (ish) book by Frank Abagnale & Stan Redding Vs the 2002 Steven Spielberg Film

The Margos go for the short con here and discuss all things Frank Abagnale, a man who between 16-21 years old was the most competent (and weirdly likable) fraud impersonating a pilot, lawyer, doctor, and teacher before finally getting caught by the FBI. He also cashed fraudulent checks around the U.S. and around the world to the tune of over $2 million.

Frank’s story is incredible and it makes for both a fun read and movie (though we do have a definite preference in this episode!)

The film ultimately adapted by Stephen Spielberg and filmed in over 100 locations in 54 days which is unheard of and adds to the pacing of the movie.  But what changes were made to make Frank’s life seem more “movie-friendly?” Do they add value? What does Frank himself think of Catch Me if You Can? Find out in this episode!

In this ep the Margos discuss :

  • The real story of Frank Abagnale (and what changes that were made for the movie)
  • The likeability of Frank even though he is kind of a skunk
  • The look of the movie
  • The cast of the movie including  Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hanks, and Christopher Walken
  • The Academy Award nominations the film earned

Clips Featured:

  • Frank Abagnale on To Tell the Truth (1977)
  • Catch Me if You Can  trailer
  • Frank (Leonardo DiCaprio) impersonates being an FBI agent in front of Carl (Tom Hanks)
  • Jennifer Garner’s scene

Call Me by Your Name

The 2007 Andre Aciman novel Vs

the 2017 Luca Guadagnino Film

The Margos are feeling 80s and dreamy with this episode talking about Call Me by Your Name. The book came out in 2007 to quite a bit of acclaim for the American/Egyptian author Andre Aciman which tells the story of a 17-year-old Elio Perlman who meets and falls in love with 24-year-old Oliver during a stay in Italy in the summer of 1987.

Elio is open about his bisexuality and is immediately attracted to Oliver--to the point he can’t seem to focus on anything but their common Jewish ancestry and Oliver’s possible interest in him.

The film was adapted by Italian director Luca Guadagnino and the Margos compare and contrast between the book and movie.

So between the book and movie, which did the Margos like more? Click on the link below to find out.

In this episode the Margos discuss :

  • The backstory of author Andre Aciman
  • The basic plot of both book & movie and where we noticed difference them
  • The music choices in the movie
  • The cast of the movie including  Timothée Chalamet, Armie Hammer, and Michael Stuhlbarg.
  • The Academy Award nominations the film earned
  • Bringing back the expression “later!”

Clips Featured:

  • Call Me By Your Name audiobook intro by Armie Hammer
  • Call Me Your Name  trailer
  • The scene with Oliver (Armie Hammer) and Elio (Timothee Chalamet) “touching” for the first time
  • Mr. Perlman (Michael Stuhlbarg) gives the film’s last speech

Rebecca

The Classic 1938 Novel by Daphne du Maurier Vs. the 1940 Film

Directed by Alfred Hitchcock

The Margos are dreaming about Manderley in this listener-suggested episode--Rebecca. The Daphne du Maurier 1938 novel which was a bestseller at the time and has never been out of print. In 1940--Alfred Hitchcock adapted it as his first American feature.  (You can watch it on YouTube!)

Du Maurier is a fascinating subject as she was a cousin of the Llewelyn Davies boys who were the object of the obsession of J.M. Barrie--the creator of Peter Pan. The Margos talk about her love of Cornwall, England, her distaste for small talk and how her marriage resembled the one featured in Rebecca.

The book & movie are both considered classics and we have all of the tidbits, trivia and behind the scenes gossip.  Get ready for a gothically good time!

In this episode the Margos discuss :

  • Du Maurier’s backstory (and rumors about her plagiarizing materials)
  • The main plot of book & movie (and how they differ)
  • The style (and temper) of Alfred Hitchcock
  • The casting of the movie including Sir Laurence Olivier, Joan Fontaine, Judith Anderson and George Sanders
  • The gay subtext in the movie
  • The different endings between book and movie

The Exorcist”

The Margos revisit the 1971 novel The Exorcist written by the very interesting William Peter Blatty.  Based on a true-ish story about a boy possessed by a demon in the 1950s Blatty changed some of the key details to create this fiction classic.

Director William Friedkin in 1973 just came off an incredible spate of box office successes including 1971’s The French Connection giving him an Academy Award for Best Director. The Exorcist became the biggest financial success of his career but turned out to be something of a curse as well.

The hosts read the book, watched the movie and decide which they like better in this episode. Plus, they talk about trivia about the book and movie.

In this episode they discuss:

  • The backstory of the “real” exorcism from the 1950s
  • Author William Peter Blatty’s writing process
  • The story behind the major casting choices
  • How some of the more famous scenes were created
  • The supposed “Exorcist” curse.

“The Haunting of Hill House

The Margos take on a listener-suggested episode--The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson and boy did we have fun with this gem of a novel and film! (Not the 1999 remake, however)

Jackson is by far one of the most intriguing authors we have covered and though she only lived to be 48 (spoiler alert) her work has inspired the greats including Stephen King, Neil Gaiman, Richard Matheson and Joyce Carol Oates.

Jackson’s complicated life is discussed in this episode along with the influential film (titled The Haunting) directed by the much-admired Robert Wise. Book Vs Movie--which did we like better? Click on the link below to find out!

Main topics covered in this episode:

  • The life story of Shirley Jackson and how her early (family friendly) work inspired moms all over the country--including peer Erma Bombeck.
  • Why she chose to write about fun, family life and horror stories. (Thanks to a rather cold mother.)
  • Her strained marriage which exasperated her health issues
  • The leads of the 1963 movie including Julie Harris, Claire Bloom, Richard Johnson and Russ Tamblyn.
  • The spiral staircase scene and how it was achieved
  • How the sexuality of the Theodora character is handled in both the book and film
  • The divine wardrobe by Mary Quant
  • The main differences between the 1959 novel and the 1963 film.

Clips Featured:

  • The Haunting  trailer
  • The “big” haunting scene with Julie Harris, Claire Bloom, Richard Johnson, and Russ Tamblyn.
  • Russ Tamblyn explains how the staircase scene was created (and in real life, very safe.)

“Brokeback Mountain”

(Wait? That was based on a short story?)

The Margos are back with a new episode suggested to us by a listener--Brokeback Mountain. You didn’t know it was based on a short story written by Annie Proulx and appeared in the New Yorker in their October 13, 1997, issue. It won the National Magazine Award for fiction in 1998. Author Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana adapted it into the screenplay for the 2005 film directed by Ang Lee.

The film starring Jake Gyllenhaal as Jack Twist and Heath Ledger as Ennis Del Mar is now considered a masterpiece and the fact it lost the 2006 Academy Award for Best Picture to now widely reviled Crash was a huge controversy at the time.

In this episode the Margos discuss:

  • The gorgeous look of the film
  • The casting of the leads and how revolutionary it was at the time.
  • Why author Annie Proulx finds the success of the story to be a mixed blessing
  • How Jake Gyllenhaal had to go to “cowboy camp” to prepare for the part
  • Trivia and behind-the-scenes insight about the making of the film

Clips Featured:

  • Brokeback Mountain  trailer
  • “I can’t quit you” Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger
  • Lurleen (Anne Hathaway) tells Ennis how Jack died
  • Outro Music Brokeback Mountain theme  by Gustavo Santaolalla

"Hidden Figures"

The Margos finally get another Margot on the show when we discuss the book to movie adaptation of Margot Lee Shetterley's Hidden Figures.  Discussed are the differences between the book and the film (which was adapted from the 55-page book proposal and not the final book.)

We have some rather strong opinions on which we liked better. Here are some highlights from our discussion:

  • The amazing cast including Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monae and Taraji P. Henson.
  • The white characters featured in the film that are NOT in the book.
  • Our reactions to the notorious "bathroom scene"
  • Our ideas for a Hidden Figures Hulu series!
  • The outstanding score by Pharrell Williams

The Exorcist”

The Margos get a little spooky before the holiday season with the 1971 novel The Exorcist written by the very interesting William Peter Blatty.

Book Vs Movie Podcast Redo

Jaws”

For all of you who have told us that “the book is always better the the movie,” get ready to eat crow!

The Book Vs. Movie podcast takes on (again!) the 1975 classic movie Jaws as well as the truly not-so-great 1974 novel from the otherwise very thoughtful author (and shark supporter) Peter Benchley. We covered this topic two years ago but our old ways of recording thing leaves quite a bit to be desired so we decided to take it on again. (Besides, who doesn’t love watching Jaws for the hundredth time?)

In this ep the Margos talk about Peter Benchley’s background, his inspiration for the novel, how Cosmopolitan magazine is responsible for it becoming a film and as much much gossip and behind-the-scenes trivia we can muster about the incredible Stephen Spielberg classic.

In this episode we discuss:

  • Peter and his wife Wendy who years after Jaws came out, became advocates for sharks and the waters that harbor them.
  • The trials and tribulations Spielberg went through to get his movie made.
  • The tension between Richard Dreyfus and Robert Shaw
  • How the summer blockbuster changed movies forever
  • Inspired by Robert Shaw’s USS Indianapolis speech, an 11-year old boy named Hunter Scott began his own investigation of the disaster and exonerated the captain’s name (You can get his book Left For Dead at Amazon.)
