Book Vs Movie

All About Eve

The Margos talk about one of the most famous fictional “Margos" in entertainment

The Margos are All About Eve in this Bette Davis-centered episode and considered us buckled up for this bumpy ride!

The story is based on actress/writer Mary Orr’s short story for Cosmopolitan magazine “The Wisdom of Eve” published in December 1946. It tells the tale of an actress (Margo Channing) who is threatened by a younger ingenue, Eve Harrington. At the time, people suspected it was secretly about the supposed rivalry on Broadway between Tallulah Bankhead and her understudy Lizabeth Scott. Orr claims it was actually about Martina Lawrence and Elizabeth Bergner.

The story was bought by 20th Century Fox for $5000 and writer/director Joseph Mankiewicz created the script that would become the classic film that won six Academy Awards, fantastic performances, and a plethora of quotable lines that have lasted to this day.

In this ep the Margos discuss:

  • The All About Eve origin story
  • Which actors did (and did not) get along
  • Trivia about the film and behind the scenes gossip
  • The amazing women in the film
  • The unusual number of retakes created a year after the film was first made
  • The cast  Bette Davis (Margo Channing,) Anne Baxter (Eve Harrington,) George Sanders (Addison DeWitt,) Celeste Holm (Karen Richards,) Gary Merill (Bill Simpson,) Marilyn Monroe (Miss Casswell,) and Thelma Ritter (Birdie Coonan.)

Clips Featured:

  • All About Eve  trailer
  • Eve meets Miss Casswell
  • “Fasten your seatbelts…”
  • Bill loves Margo
  • Margo describes what it means to be a woman
  • Eve now belongs to Addison
  • Outro music Bette Davis Eyes (Performed by Kim Carnes)

Book Vs Movie

The Big Sleep

Raymond Chandler’s Novel Vs the Bogie/Bacall Classic Film

The Margos are both working from home these days so we have some extra time to devote to the show. Meaning--a new episode each week for the foreseeable future. (Huzzah!)

This episode is devoted to Raymond Chandler and one of his best-known novels--The Big Sleep. This is the first novel to feature Detective Philip Marlowe and this story is filled with witty lines, nefarious people and double-crossing aplenty. If you are under the impression that this story will be slow and/or easy to understand because it was created almost 100 years ago--guess again. This is one of the most complicated plots we have tried to explain on this show and that is saying something!

The film was directed by Howard Hawks and features a script by William Faulkner and Leigh Brackett. We talk about all of the film trivia we can get our hands on and the incredible performances. So, if you are looking for differences between book & movie, click on the link below and listen!

In this ep the Margos discuss:

  • The life of Raymond Chandler
  • The popularity of detective stories and film noir in the 1940s
  • How Chandler created the novel out of several short stories
  • The tension between Hawkes, Bogart & Bacall
  • The unusual number of retakes created a year after the film was first made
  • The cast  including Humphrey Bogart (Philip Marlowe,) Lauren Bacall (Vivian Rutledge,) John Ridgley (Eddie Mars,) Martha Vickers (Carmen Sternwood,) Dorothy Malone (Acme Book Shop Proprietress,) Peggy Knudsen (Mona Mars,) and Louis Jean Heydt (Joe Brody.)

Clips Featured:

  • The Big Sleep  trailer
  • Bogart & Bacall talking about “horses”
  • Bogart & the Book Shop Proprietress
  • Bogart & Martha Vickers scene
  • Bogart & Bacall last scene
  • Outro music And Her Tears Flowed Like Wine (Music by Stan Kenton & Charles Lawrence. Lyrics by Joe Green. Sung by Lauren Bacall)

Book Vs Movie

Valley of the Dolls

The 1968 Jacqueline Susann Novel Vs the 1967 Camp Classic Film

“Sparkle, Neely Sparkle!”

The Margos are still enjoying the swinging 60s and what better way to celebrate than talking about the amazing Jacqueline Susann  who is the first author to have three consecutive #1 books on the New York Times bestseller list. Though her work was critically panned at the time and she was considered a self-promoting hack by the literary elite (how dare they!) Susann is now an icon for fun-living women who dare to take up space.

Valley of the Dolls caused a scandal at the time with its frank discussions about sex, sexism in show business, drug use, and cancer. But Susann had a flair for publicity, had a super-sharp wit and a husband (Irving Mansfield) who promoted her work with incredible enthusiasm. This woman practically invented the book tour and became just as famous as Truman Capote and Phillip Roth but for the fun, camp set.

The movie directed by Mark Robson was rushed into production in 1967 and was seen as a bit trashy and embarrassing at the time. Today it is known as a camp classic.

In this episode, we talk about the many differences between the original book & the movie to decide which we like better. (P.S. We adore Jacqueline Susann!)

In this ep the Margos discuss:

Clips Featured:

  • Valley of the Dolls  trailer
  • BBC Interview with Jacqueline Susann (1973)
  • Neely O’Hara & Helen Lawson fight
  • Neely & Tony Polar “sing”
  • Outro music “Theme from the Valley of the Dolls” composed by Dionne Warwick
