Book Vs Movie

The Polar Express

The Margos take a wild ride into the classic 1985 children’s book and compare it to the 2004 Robert Zemeckis Film

It’s our last new episode of the year and we had to celebrate with one of our most requested titles ever--The Polar Express from author/illustrator Chris Van Allsburg

The book sold millions of copies since its 1985 release (one million by 1989 alone!) and it's only 32 pages so we only have a few wonderful things to say about it. But what about the 2004 film starring Mr. Tom Hanks? We have feelings about this movie kids--and we want to know what YOU think in the comments below.

So between book & movie--which did we like better? Have a listen to find out!

In this ep the Margos discuss:

  • Chris Van Allsburg's amazing career
  • The basic differences between the book & movie
  • The cast of the movie Tom Hanks ( Hero Boy, Father, Santa Claus, Conductor, and Hobo,) Leslie Zemeckis (Mother, Sister Sarah,) Eddie Deezan (Know-It-All,) Nona Gaye (Hero Girl,) Peter Scolari (Billy-Lonely Boy,) and Micheal Jeter (Smokey.)

Clips Featured:

  • The Polar Express  trailer
  • “When Christmas Comes to Town” (Glen Ballard & Alan Silvestri)
  • “Rocking on Top of the World” by Steven Tyler
  • Outro music “Believe” by Josh Groban

It’s a Wonderful Life”

The Margos get out their hankies and talk about another holiday classic

“No man is a failure who has friends.” The Margos wanted to fit in one more holiday movie this year and what better way to celebrate than with the number one weepie of all time--It’s a Wonderful Life? (Yes, it was based on a short story The Greatest Gift by Philip Van Doren Stern and you can read it for yourself in under 15 minutes.)

The Greatest Gift is the story of a man named George Bailey who wants to commit suicide. An unnamed stranger gives George his wish to see how life would be like if he had never been born. In the end, he chooses life. Van Doren Stern wrote this short story (which took him several years to finish) in 1944 and at first, he could not find anyone willing to publish it. Eventually, he self-published 200 pamphlets and sent as a Christmas card to family and friends.

Director Frank Capra eventually landed the property and decided to completely revamp the story to include George’s childhood and more. It is now considered a classic film but at the time it was a bit of a box office failure and Capra never really had the opportunity to see how his work influenced generations of storytellers for decades now.

In this show, we discuss the differences between the short story and the film. Which version did the Margos like better? Check out the link below to find out!

In this ep the Margos discuss :

"A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens

the 2009 Jim Carey Animated Movie

Plus, the Margos Pick Their "Top 5 Scrooge Performances"

The Margos continue their holiday celebrations with the all-time classic "A Christmas Carol"  by Charles Dickens. There have been hundreds of adaptations on the theme of Scrooge and is ultimate salvation but only one features stop-motion animation and Jim Carey so we pair the discussion with Disney's A Christmas Carol directed by Book Vs Movie favorite Robert Zemeckis.

We had SO much fun recording this episode!

Topics we cover here:

  • The Margos each pick our favorite "Scrooge" adaptation
  • The incredible life story of Charles Dickens and the reasons he wrote A Christmas Carol
  • How England changed how they celebrate Christmas after the publication
  • Our favorite adaptations of the work
  • Jim Carey’s frenetic performance

Book Vs Movie

Christmas With the Kranks

Yes, the 2004 movie is based on a book!

The Margos have more holiday spirit than Luther & Nora Krank, the main characters of the John Grisham novel Skipping Christmas. Luther & Nora normally go all out during the holidays in equal zeal with their neighbors who seem to think Christmas celebrations are THE most important thing in the world. (One Margo liked the movie more than the other!)

But with their daughter spending the holidays in Peru for the Peace Corps, they decide to forgo decadent spending and take a vacation on a cruise instead. Mayhem ensues.

The movie (titled Christmas With the Kranks) stars Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis as Luther & Nora Krankd and even though the film has been out for 15 years now--neither Margo has seen it before!

So between book & movie--which did we like better? Have a listen to find out!

In this ep the Margos discuss:

Clips Featured:

  • Christmas with the Kranks trailer
  • Nora Krank gets the ham
  • Blair Krank (Julie Gonzalo) comes home for the holidays
  • Luther Krank surprises neighbor for Christmas
  • Outro music Run DMC Christmas in Hollis

“The Stephen King Storytime Bonus Ep

Special Guest Juliette Miranda

Just a couple of lady podcasters talking about their favorite Stephen King stories

The Breathing Method” & “You Know, They Got a Hell of a Band

The Stephen King bonus eps do so well for us at Book Vs Movie that we decided to have fun with the format and talk about favorite King short stories/novels/screenplays and works that have necessarily been turned into a movie (or a really cheesy one--stay tuned for those coming up!)

In this ep, Margo D. talks with Juliette Miranda of the amazing Unwriteable Rant podcast and we have a grand old time imbibing our refreshments (Margo enjoys a nice wine out of a can!) while each discussing one our favorite King short stories.

Margo D. starts with the novella The Breathing Method which appeared in the book Different Seasons in 1982. It’s the story that takes place in 1935 and told by Dr. Emlyn McCarron who meets a young pregnant woman named Sandra Stansfield. She is single and determined to have her baby in the most natural way possible and learns the then-new Lamaze method breathing from Dr. McCarron who soon falls a bit in love with her.

The ending of this book scared Margo D. so much that she waited 20 years to attempt it again. It has not been adapted as a film yet but is technically in development with director Scott  Derrickson (Doctor Strange and The Day the Earth Stood Still) attached.

Juliette Miranda then talks about one of her favorite king short stories “You Know, The Have a Hell of a Band” which originally appeared in the 1992 collection of rock and roll based stories--Shock Rock which was edited by Jeff Gelb.

In this story, a bickering couple (King’s specialty!) are hopelessly lost while driving on vacation. They eventually wind up in a town which just happens to be haunted by the ghosts of famous dead musicians such as Janis Joplin, Elvis Presley, and Buddy Holly just to name a few.

Because it is a Stephen King story--things get weird and creepy in no time. There was an adaptation of this story which appeared in the anthology series Nightmares & Dreamscapes and it is--kind of stinky. But it’s also fun and we have a great time discussing what we like about the Shock Rock book as well.

Margo D. also talks about her favorite story Shock Rock--Bob Dylan, Troy Johnson and the Speed Queen by F. Paul Wilson.

I hope you enjoy this different take on our usual Stephen King bonus eps.

Book Vs Movie (RIP Robert Evans)

Rosemary’s Baby”

Special Podcast Guest Juliette Miranda and Margo D. Take a Close Look at the Classic Book and Movie

Today we learned that Paramount Chief Robert Evans passed away at the age of 89. So we decided to replay one of our favorite episodes is honored. Margo D. (co-host of Book Vs. Movie) and Juliette Miranda of the Unwritable Rant podcast turn up the spookiness talking about the classic Ira Levin novel and the venerated film directed by Roman Polanski

This originally ran in 2017. Enjoy!

In this episode we discuss:

  • The incredible work of Ira Levin
  • Mia Farrow’s incredible performance and offscreen troubles with husband Frank Sinatra (!)
  • The near-perfect direction by Roman Polanski and how he frames his shots.
  • The weird rape scene featuring a rather unfortunate “hairy paw”
  • How strong (or weak) the character of Rosemary is at different times in the movie.

The Stephen King Bonus Ep

With Special Guest Adam Riske (F This Movie)

Two podcasting, movie geeks talk about two classic Stephen King stories

Sleepwalkers” & “Sometimes They Come Back

In this special “Stephen King” ep, Margo D. and Adam Riske who is a contributor to the excellent movie podcast F This Movie, get together to talk about two rather weird Stephen King productions that they both love for nostalgic reasons. Then we wander off into some unexpected pop-culture tangents-- but let's get into the movies first.

Adam begins with 1992’s Sleepwalkers which stars Brian Krause, Madchen Amick, and Alice Krige. King penned the screenplay based on an unpublished story and it is directed by his pal Mick Garris who also helmed King's The Stand and the updated The Shining.

What is this movie about? Well, it has a mother and son who are not only creepy supernatural creatures who feed on virgins and then skip town. They are also involved with each other romantically!  Amick plays his love interest and her parents are played by Cindy Pickett and Lyman Ward who played “Ferris Beuler’s” parents (they have since divorced.)

There are all kinds of strangeness with this movie including the herding of cats, a graveyard picnic date scene and an appearance by Mark Hamill! It’s pretty fantastic.

Margo D. chose Sometimes They Come Back which was first featured in King’s collection of short stories Night Shift. The 1991 CBS-TV movie starred Tim Matheson, Brooke Adams and Nicholas Sadler (whom Adam and Margo recall from his famous appearance in a 1990 episode of The Cosby Show.)

Matheson plays Jim Norman, a school teacher who lost his brother to a tragic gang attack and now must face his past as they all somehow show up in his life to raise hell once again.

The original in printed form scared the bejeebus out of a young Margo. The TV adaptation? Not so much but it makes for an amazing discussion with the following topics covered:

  • HBO’s original sex comedy Dream On starring Brian Benben
  • Chanteuse Jane Child and her amazing 90s hit Don’t Wanna Fall in Love
  • Our differing opinions on the upcoming Pet Semetary remake. (Adam is not sure about that one)

Hope you enjoy this different take on our usual Stephen King bonus eps. (Margo breaks out into several giggle fits here.)

The Stephen King Bonus Ep

Pet Sematary (Original & Remake)

It’s time for another Stephen King Bonus ep and Margo D. is joined by Deana Marie of the Twisted Philly podcast to talk about the remake of Pet Sematary directed by Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer (Starry Eyes) and comparing it to the 1989 movie directed by Mary Lambert.

Plus, we delve into the 1983 novel that was inspired by author King’s stay at a residence in Maine for a year that was located by a busy roadway. In real life, his daughter’s cat was run over by a truck and his son was almost struck down by one as well.

King took these events and created the creepy story of the Creed family who moves to Ludlow, Maine to escape the city life. Instead of finding tranquility they discover their home is located near a pet cemetery that has some supernatural powers.

So between the book and two films--what do we think of Pet Semetary? Click on the link below.

IT: Chapter 2

It’s time for another Stephen King Bonus ep and Margo D. is joined by Deana Marie of the Twisted Philly podcast to talk about the Andy Muschietti film that is a follow-up to the mass success of the 2017 first chapter which is one of the most successful horror films of all time.

Chapter 2 follows the adult members of “The Losers Club” as they return to Derry, Maine to take on Pennywise the Clown one more time. How much of the original 1986 IT novel is featured in the movie? Why is it almost three hours long? Do we like the adult casting? All of this is discussed and more.

Two years ago, Margo & Deana disagreed on how they felt about the first chapter. What do they think about the sequel? You will have to listen below to find out.

Stephen King Bonus Ep

"The Stand”

The 1994 Movie Cast & Our Picks for the Cast of the Upcoming TV series

It’s another special “Stephen King Bonus Ep” and Margo D. and Deana Marie of the Twisted Philly are back and wanting to discuss quite possibly the biggest piece of Stephen King news that we have heard in ages. For many years there have been rumors of adapting King’s 1978 novel The Stand to either a TV series or as a film trilogy.

So far we have had one adaptation--Mick Garris’ 1994 mini-series which ran on ABC-TV and is either beloved or reviled by hardcore fans.

None other than Ben Affleck himself wanted to create a movie trilogy but the project never took off and remained in turnaround.

So CBS All Access decided to say “hold my beer!” and create their own 2020 limited TV series which has King fans buzzing.

The story is about an apocalyptic flu virus (“Captain Trips”)  that is spread across the U.S. and wipes out 99% of the population is one of King’s most revered works. The people who survive the flu break up into two camps:

  • The “good people” (including Stu Redmond, Frannie Goldsmith, and Mother Abigail Freemantle) head off to Boulder,  CO.
  • The “evil people” (including Trashcan Man and Lloyd Henreid) make Las Vegas their home

In 1990 King released an unabridged version of the novel with an additional 400+ pages. There are scenes including a character called “The Kid” and Stu meeting Jim Morrison--but the1994 mini-series is mostly based on the abridged version.

Will CBS All Access include anything from the 1990 version?

In this ep, Margo D. & Deana are all about casting. We go in depth on how we feel the 1994 casting of our favorite characters and then each pick our personal choice for the new show. CBS casting people--please let us know if you are listening!

You can listen to this episode using the link below.
